This one is sad because I wanted to like it. I don't really think anything is necessarily wrong with the book, but I had a hard time connecting or caring. It felt like I was in the main characters head and she assumed I knew everything so very little was shared other than her thoughts. It was mostly inner monologue. I wanted to experience things, I wanted to be shown things. I love some good monologue but it was waaaay too much.

This was exactly what I was looking for this month, just some interesting supernatural horror. This one tackles a lot of themes, but it handles them well, and the overarching plot and characters are very well written. The scares aren't overt, but they're still very much there, and the pace and deftness with which Delaney brings them out if extremely well done. This is one I would recommend to a lot of my horror fans out there, it's quick but also serious, and hits on a lot of themes about colonization, BIPOC, and queer culture, something I didn't expect but was pleasantly surprised about.
