The atmosphere of humid Florida really comes alive in this book, as with the previous two books I've read by the author. I wanted to experience the little swimming and dive spots of Tru and her companions. If I was not so invested in the identity of the serial killer from two decades ago and who might have killed Bailey and Celeste, I would have dnfed the book at the poor treatment of East. He deserved better from nearly everyone around him except his buddy Paz, who seemed like a good friend. The remembrances of Tru and Rio fit nicely into the story but also feel far-fetched. Tru being connected to Bailey, a native of the same town, has an air of poetry to it, but I have trouble buying Rio's story. The reader is reminded repeatedly by multiple characters, including Tru as narrator, that Rio is a liar, but we are expected to believe everything she says, which makes me wonder what nefarious plans does she have for Tru? Who is Rio really? Tru came across as selfish and reserved despite growing up in the supposedly small town, so I suspect she will have the life she deserves. In the meantime, #justiceforEast.

This book is so "Florida". Maybe that's why I loved it so much. There's so much nostalgia from the setting that other books taking place here just don't get. Mount Orange and Hidden Glen are fictional, but I've absolutely been there before. And excellent mystery making too.

this book was a mess 😂. I was really interested in the beginning, the suspense and atmosphere was written really well but it got sooo slow like for a thriller nothing happened until the 60-70% mark. A lot of the plot was predictable for me, and not because of good foreshadowing imo. I just could not get on board with the driving factor of this plot
(that Rio and Tru were reincarnations of Celeste and Bailey)
. Maybe if it had been done differently I would’ve been more convinced by it but it felt kind of contrived to me and used as a lazy way to set up the relationship between Rio and Tru.  I liked the characters as much as I could but I was so over the relationship drama and East deserved so much better on all fronts 😭😭

By the time we got to the killer reveal at the end I was so done 😂, I guess I was interested enough to find out how it ended but I was not impressed.

Well, this book was disappointing. I had hoped the mystery part would go another way. But it was thoroughly predictable. The book had some enjoyable parts, like the supernatural element. But the murderer element was too simple and easy to figure out.

Narrator Rating: 4.25 stars
The narrator did an excellent job, with tonal shifts and all. I just wish she'd been able to differentiate the male voices more.
