I get the feeling I should've read this one after reading the Original Shannara series...

I've read this book several times over the years. Although I forgot more than I thought, it was as good as I remembered it! Preia Starle was, and still is, my favorite after this re-read. Chew Magna is definitely my favorite setting. I just love a good ancient ruin that houses an evil capable of destroying the world.

I honestly don't get the hate this book seems to garner. This was my first Shannara book about 15 years ago when I started reading Brooks, and I thought it was great. Very good, classic-troped fantasy. It's also nice to have had this basis as I went on to read the rest of the series. And in hindsight, what a treat to read about Jerle himself, and a young Allanon as well. Just loved it.

I actually read it as a prequel, before delving into the trilogy. It is much better written than The Sword of Shannara, more concise and tight. If you are not already familiar with The Sword of Shannara series want to start the series, start with this prequel.

The Shannara books are fun! I try to read them few months apart from one another because they are more or less the same story retold.
