I was so happy to see this series return! I’m sorry to say I didn’t like this one as much as the first, but it was still a solid sophomore novel. Saffron was as delightful as before. I liked Lee, and I’m glad Saffron got paired with someone who respects her for her project. There was one element I didn’t care for, though:
Spoiler I really didn't like the love triangle. It was disappointing because I really like this series and it’s bringing in a trope that I generally don’t enjoy.
It looks like that won’t be an issue in future books, though, which I’m glad of. I still really liked it, and I’m looking forward to the next.

I received an advance copy of this ebook from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really loved this book now that we’ve gotten to know Saffron! At first I thought I was going to be super sad without my fav scholarly hunk Alexander Ashton but the introduction of Dr. Lee as Saffron’s partner was fun and he definitely has a spunky personality and brought out a new side of Saffron. It broke my heart when
Alexander returned all ready to hold Saffron in his arms and found out about her and Lee. The way he held on to her smile and her to keep him going on his exploration was soooo sweet. I do have to say I was so unfulfilled when at the end she didn’t necessarily choose either men. I was sad for both Alexander and Lee who clearly are swooning over Saffron!
ok back to the murder, in my opinion it was super easy to figure out. The author left lots of clues for you to determine who done it. So I wasn’t super surprised at all since I saw it coming. What made this book better than the first is the dazzling nightlife Saffron and Lee were involved in to solve the murder! It added a whole new layer instead of the academic setting from the first novel. You can tell the author has really done her research and I learned so many facts about the 1920s era in London! It’s a fun historical mystery with some romance thrown in and I loved it. Would recommend highly!

This book improved on its predecessor in every way. There were lots of flowers and quite a few fatalities. Saffron is an even more engaging character, and each new character stands out. I also really enjoyed seeing more of the seedy outlets of 1920’s London.

The mystery, the comedy, and even the romance play so much better in this book. The love triangle seems natural, and plays very well into the characters motivations throughout the last act of the book.

One of my favorite things about the book is how closely related it is to the first; it doesn’t drop threads and there are genuine emotional consequences.

Chapters 25-32 provided some of the most electrifying reading ive done this year. And after the Epilogue, i am excited to see how a potential sequel will play out!

I love this sub-genre so much that I am most forgiving of the fact that it was about a grumpy nepo-baby with questionable skills who got herself in the same pickle as book 1. It was a fast enough read, but could have been so much more.
