This was so cute! Loved this face-paced sweet read. Olivia was definitely my favorite character and I so appreciated the author's representation of the complexities of her personality. I related to her a lot and I just loved how she talked about her feelings. I also loved the honesty that was so apparent in this books representation of PTSD, sexual assault/revenge porn, and abandonment issues. It is hard to unpack all of those things in a book that only takes place over 3 days, but Johnson totally did it well. I also loved Peter's character, he was so lovable and goofy.

Leah Johnson is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine.

She has the ability to balance cute and fluffy stories with some hard hitting topics woven into the story, and Rise To The Sun was no exception.

What I love about all her books is the way each character is unapologetically queer and themselves and its refreshing when there are so many novels out there about tragic coming out stories.

In Rise To The Sun we follow two main characters who meet at a 3 day music festival and feelings start to blossom. Toni is still grieving the tragic death of her musician father and steuggles to make a name for herself in the music scene, while Olivia is being shamed and victim blamed for the sexual harrassment and assault perpetrated by her ex boyfriend. As the romance develops between the two characters, they help each other grow and learn about what truly matters and to use your voice to stick up for yourself.

The boom description on the cover hints at a possible mass shooting occuring in the story so I would recommend avoiding the aynopsis because it might leave you a tad disappointed like I was.

But dont let that deter you from enjoying this book because I still loved the way Johnson handled the theme of assault with nuance and empathy.

I alsp thougjt the romance between the two lead characters was one of the cutest and best written romances Ive read in a long time.

This book is really easy to get into and its a story that you will fly through and feel like you want to know these characters in real life.
