This book took me a while to get into. As a lover of mystery, fantasy, and romance this series sounded perfect! However, after reading the first 3 books in ZA and loving them it was hard to leave that series and go on to this one to do the read-through that was recommended to me when reading these books.
There are a lot of character introductions in the first half and it can be a lot to get your head around. But that can be said for the first book of most series of this kind.
While I did develop connections to the characters and found their stories interesting, I wasn't completely hooked until around 70% through. And then... Omg. So worth pushing through. I physically can't read the rest fast enough!

the only way this wouldn't be a 5 star it's if I was petty enough to consider how I rolled my eyes every time elise would say "my mom was a... so I..." or "I grew up around... so I..."

This is SO GOOD. is the writing a bit juvenile? Yes but man it's one hell of an entertaining book and series. I'm doing the large zodiac academy read with this sandwiched in the middle and I'm so glad for it! I did spoil myself by starting shadow princess then changed my mind that id do this read. But honestly that's kind of giving this more depth.
