This franchise is in a unique cultural place right now. Not only has it been adapted into a popular TV series, but the source material book series is still chugging along. And I don't think there's room enough for both. While I still feel the creative direction of the books has always been braver and more captivating, I can't deny the show has gotten better, or at least more consistent, and there's no denying its popularity. In fact, it appears that the show has now surpassed the books as canon for the majority of fans. If that's the case--and if you agree that one of the main reasons for following a genre franchise is for the fandom community you share--then it looks like the fight is over.
This volume is fine in and of itself, but it feels somewhat...secondary. Financially, it doesn't make sense to end anytime soon, but it could use the urgency of having an end in sight.

I think I'm looking forward to reading what this and probably the coming volumes are building up to, but otherwise, in this particular volume the story feels pretty much a repetition of things that has happened before but with new settings and other characters.
What's that quote? You either die a hero or live long enough to become a villain. Something like that. Well, it took 16 volumes but Rick seems to have made the transition into the character they all feared stumbling across. Brutal, untrusting and violent, even the others doubt him. Sure, he ends with a more positive, well-intentioned outlook, but you can't help but wonder how long it takes for him to retain that power-crazed nature and go a bit mental again.
Lots of exposition; not much action.
Lots of things being set into place; not much character development.

While on a run, Michonne and Abraham confront a man called Jesus. They manage to take him back to town. Turns out Jesus is a scout from a large group at Hilltop which is twenty miles away. Hilltop trades with other nearby groups and is constantly looking for more. They mean Rick and company no harm, but Rick can't believe that after everything he's seen. Eventually, though, they agree to check the place out. It's practically a paradise compared to what they've known, but everything is not as great as it seems. A mysterious figure called Negan and his group, the Saviors, have been terrorizing the Hilltop community.
I really enjoyed the change of pace in this volume. It's good to meet some intriguing new characters and see the introduction of a new place. The Hilltop seems to be quite the place even if they are being terrorized by a villain they know little about. It offers quite a bit of promise to Rick and company. It could be just the place they're looking for. Of course, Rick would offer to help them out, so I'm intrigued to meet Negan and the Saviors in upcoming volumes. Rick gets to make another great impassioned speech in this one about their future and actually living.

OOOO I'm really excited to see where the story is going. I need to get the next few volumes from the library ASAP.
