Gilead by Marilynne Robinson is about an old man reflecting on life and writing a letter to his young son.
Thoughts while reading:
-The book starts off slow, and while there isn’t much of a plot, I find I still want to keep reading. The prose is really lovely and lyrical
-The story becomes more engrossing in the latter half when you find out about the conflict with the younger Jack
-I feel so sad for Jack. Despite being loved by those around him, I can’t imagine what it’s like to just not fit in, to feel like you never do anything right, to disappoint those around you until you wonder whether it’s just your fate
There's a lot in this book to think about. Despite not being religious, and despite the slow start, I enjoyed reading this and I imagine I will be reflecting on it. I would give it a 4 out of 5

Lovely writing in some places but yikes this one was boring. haven’t been this close to just giving up on a book in a while.
Gentle and patient read. Found the conversations/dialogue especially between the Johns to be compelling. Getting into it in the beginning was difficult, but once my expectations were set it was more enjoyable.
