If I could I would give this a 3 and a half. About halfway through I was starting to get a little bored and wondering what else could possibly happen, then the second part hit and I was totally invested and tore through the rest of the book. So a little bit of a pacing problem, but I recommend it. Very interesting and heartbreaking.

Would probably have been better if I hadn't know it was her mother from the beginning. (Heard a podcast with this story a few years ago.)

This was a pick for my book club, and we were all VERY frustrated with the slow reveal of the "mystery." About a quarter of the way through the book, perceptive readers will know whodunnit. Halfway through, EVERYONE should get the big, damning clue. The one that Axton herself really should have gotten. Hell, it's a marvel that none of the credit agencies suggested it to Axton.
I think it was waiting for that reveal that got me to stick around, but the structure of the book is kind of scattershot. It seems this was a series of shorter essays that all got joined together by an editor, without any serious reworking. This book would have been improved a lot if all the bits and pieces had been separated out and put into a timeline, and THEN edited down, instead of just making a flimsy connective tissue between things.
Still, it was interesting, and now has me paranoid about my own identity. Cheers!

I attended a Zoom event through JCPL to hear this author speak about her book, and I recieved the book as part of the deal! I also heard about this book since it won an award through Indiana Humanities.
An interesting story of an upsetting life. I had questions after the author event, and, as expected, I have more after reading the book.
Besides all that Ms. Betz-Hamilton endured and discovered, I find it fasinating she turned this topic into a career.
The photo captions bothered me, not listing people in the correct order.
