An absolutely beautiful collection of poems I will read over and over and over, and my heart will break and mend each time.

A lot of very moving poetry in this collection. Some did not resonate with me but I could still tell it was a great piece. My favorite poem was EVERY TIME I EVER SAID I WANTED TO DIE -- I read it a few times over and over and it made me cry.

I know Andrea Gibson from her spoken word albums available on Spotify. I was looking for the same sort of emotion-laden poetry in her book and I was not disappointed.
You Better Be Lightning is a poetry collection, fairly autobiographical of Andrea Gibson. She covers topics like love, break ups, being gay/non binary, feeling out of place, and the concept of love.
It’s been a long time since I moved through a book slowly in order to purposefully savor it. I did just that with this, pen in hand to underline and explore. Gibson has a way with metaphors and similes that I find endlessly fascinating.
Some might describe her writing as “dramatic,” but I adore it. It tickles a piece of me that needs recognition.
Warnings:
TW: Sexual assault
Language: Yes.
Drugs: Mild.
Violence: Sexual assault discussed but not described. The repercussions have an air of violence to them.
Sex: Yes, not graphic.
