This story was so cute! All the friendly side characters were lovely and charming, and the villains were very hateable. The pace was good, the romance a satisfying slow burn, and the ending happy. Add in all the fun time travel cultural shock antics, and what more could you want?

Audrey is in a rut: she's been waitlisted at the art school of her dreams and was recently broken up with by her boyfriend, and she cannot find the inspiration to do any art whatsoever.

Two hundred years earlier, Lucy is resigned to the fact that she is going to have to marry a man more than twice as old as her and a dick to boot, because her father demands it.

Can the two of them save one another? (Obviously the answer is yes, this is a romance novel after all).

This wasn't what I expected, but I didn't really know what to expect in the first place. Libby recommended it to me after I finished Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, so I expected a sapphic retelling of that novel, but that wasn't what this was at all.

But it was cute and sweet, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I do have to wonder about why Lippincott, in a queer love story, chose to name one of her characters Matthew Shepard.  That was... A choice.

This book isn’t my usual genre; I read it for a book club and might not have finished it otherwise. I would definitely recommend this to people who are into YA and romance, it just wasn’t for me. I found the first half corny and the ending rushed, but all in all I’m glad I stuck with it. It was cute and many of the characters were so lovable.

I felt like Audrey kind of
idealized the present day; as someone who lives here, it sucks. But I admit she did acknowledge some of its imperfections from time to time. So she didn’t make it totally seem like Trident and roses, but I would’ve given Lucy a little more warning about things like fascism and COVID and the climate crisis before she decided to live here/now.
