I never like the books that everyone else likes. I'm starting to get a complex. Anyway... this just felt very contrived to me. The characters did not feel real, their relationships to one another felt forced, I had no emotional attachment to any of them or anything that happened. What am I missing?

Beautiful cover for what I am sure some will find as a beautiful story, but I struggled with this one. Katie (Liz) has a traumatic event happen that is somehow related to her sister but it takes almost 80% of the book before we figure out exactly what that is. The book alternates between past and present. I ended up skimming a lot of it. I’m not a huge fan of alternating time lines where the past directly correlates to what’s happening in the present yet each “past” chapter ends with an ominous or vague statement of what went down. The suspense and intrigue loses itself after a while and I just stop caring.
Katie grew up skiing and became an Olympian. But after an injury and incident (not disclosed for most of the book) she feels the need to escape and leave Idaho for Buenos Aires. There she mite a group of people who also seem to be running or hiding from something. Meanwhile we get glimpses of her past and hints of what happened that made her flee.
While I liked parts of her story and thought it well written, I didn’t really care for Katie and after so many chapters of not finding out what happened with her sister, I stopped caring about that too. I do believe in the right hands though this would be a well-loved and appreciated book
I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.

This book uses dual timelines to tell its story, alternating between present day and the past. I struggled with the present day portions, and skimmed more than I typically would. The book is well written and the past storyline kept me engaged so still giving it 3 stars.
I went into this book blind after the author's books were recommended on a podcast episode (and now I can't find which podcast it was - I'll edit this if I figure it out). One of the hosts stated they were looking forward to author Andrea Dunlop's upcoming March release of Women Are the Fiercest Creatures. I going to blame not being able to find the podcast name on the fact that as soon as they gave a synopsis of Women Are the Fiercest Creatures, I exited the podcast and went looking for the author's backlist. From her backlist, I picked We Came Here to Forget because of it's gorgeous cover and the story did not disappoint. If you are looking for suspense, this book definitely has it. I'd also give it 3 spicy peppers. The chapters are relatively short and told with differing timelines - main character now and main character growing up and catches up to present time. The quick chapters were definitely a bonus. This book packed an emotional punch so if you're worried about triggers check out the list on StoryGraph.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book narrated by Julia Whelan. Another home run for narration!
