While this is the third in a series of Inspector Sejer stories it confirms that each book has it's own structure.

Fossum's first was more a traditional who-dun-it with the reader learning the facts, but not the perpetrator, until Sejer did. The second was similar but we learned who the perp was earlier and urged Sejer to find him as we read. From the very beginning we know the name of the killer but the whys, wherefores, and connections to the rest of the people is what develops.

With this mix of structure Fossum will keep me coming back.

Recommended for fans of crime fiction and psychological thrillers.

I gave it 7.5/10 on my personal scale.

Scariest book ever.

While part of the Inspector Sejer series, Sejer and the police actually have a small role in the narrative. Instead this was more psychological suspense with an emphasis on characterizations. Dark, suspenseful, and, though very well written, quite disturbing.

Tämä oli vähän parempi kuin edellinen osa, mutta olin vähän pettynyt siihen miten joidenkin hahmojen tarinat jäivät jotenkin kesken. Tämä olisi voinut olla vähän pidempikin kirja.

After what I thought was a slow start, this one turned out to have more meat on its bones than I expected. It's disorienting the way that Fossum will let Inspector Sejor be a minor character in his own series, poor guy. But I may come back to this one for a second go-round; there are lots of interesting parallels built into the actions of the various characters.

I liked this more than the earlier Sejer books but still, something about it left me filling dissatisfied.

This is a compelling look inside the minds of several very different killers. But I didn't find this book satisfying as a mystery - I think I might have enjoyed it more if I had read other books about Inspectors Sejer and Skarre first. I wasn't very interested in their roles in the story.

Didn’t like this one as much as their others I’ve read. Much of the story was written from the perspective of the murderer, rather than the detective. And there was a weird twist in Sejer’s personal relationship that I didn’t care for. I’ll read one more and see if it gets back to what I enjoyed about the first two ...
