Duke is everything

Duke is everything; large, hairy, beastly, commanding. Probably my favorite alpha male with the biggest freaking heart. And Samantha is lovely, quirky, sweet, and just naughty enough. Tessa’s character descriptions are so good and the sex scenes even better.

Two commitment phobes fall in love at first sight but are too scared to embrace it. This book was fine,  a quick and fun read but a bit to OTT for my preferences. Duke was a cute mechanic who mostly just wanted to watch sports and fix things. Sam was an illustrator who saw characters and whimsy everywhere she went. The possessive and rough edge to the spice felt a bit out of place in this environment and the book ended up just kinda middling for me.

Duke and Samantha
(Audiobook)
Duke is vaughns friend from the army, he works at the factory, and Vaughn and river are staying in his house. We know he has 4 sisters from vaughns book, and they all live with him. So he’s always seeking peace and quiet and sports. He’s at the local bar when he sees a girl he’s never seen before and everyone is asking who she is. And he stands up for her so they’ll leave her alone. Sam is in the bar because her brother is still out of town. She had been drawing this big Goliath of a man when he stands up for her and she decides he’s not a gladiator but a sea captain. So she tells him she’s redrawing him. He realizes she’s really good. But he’s upset she’s already noticed his limp. And when he brings it up she says she’s sorry she just drew what she saw but it doesn’t bother her at all and she starts packing up and asks where she can get some food. He tells her there’s nowhere he can direct her but he can take her somewhere. He tells her there’s a bakery that makes good egg sandwiches for their regulars. She tells him she put his name and license plate into this tweet app thing and he asks for the name to send to his sisters saying how it’s a good idea and she melts over him. When they drive past the factory she knows now would be a good time to tell him her brother is who owns the factory but she doesn’t. What she doesn’t know is Vaughn already knows who her brother is. We also know she’s a childrens illustrator and she asked Duke if he has kids and he tells her just a Marcy. And we get an inner glimpse of her that makes me think she isn’t able to have kids. We also get a mention of where she talks about a business she had started and how things didn’t work out. So we know Samantha has some underlying baggage. But we also know Duke cares about 3 things, sports, steak, and quiet. He never had women in that category. He plays dumb and asks where she needs dropped off at and when they get there she tells him she needs to be honest and tell him who her brother is but he already knew. He tells her he doesn’t do relationships and she tells him she doesn’t either. The next day at the grocery store he sees men hitting on her and her only buying junk food so he invites her to their barbecue where she gets to meet everyone. Then River invites her to go see her brothers band and she loves them and agrees to go. Duke says the only way she’s going is if there’s another ticket for him. River says she can’t believe he’s going that he never goes and will be missing out on his sports center. And Samantha asks what she means and she tells her how sports center is every night and then she says you know he actually does miss it a lot. When they get to the hotel Duke isn’t sure whether they should get one room or 2 and Vaughn tells him he should get them adjoining rooms to give her the option, so he does. Samantha tells him she has something for him and when he gets to her room she’s playing sports center on the tv and tells him she feels bad and he finds himself feeling things for this girl. When it’s time for the concert he realizes they have front row so he tells her he’ll wait outside because he doesn’t want to block anyones view and they don’t do seats anymore so I think he’s worried about his leg hurting him. Samantha noticed when it bothers him. She takes him to the vip section where they can sit and she gets on his shoulders so she can see but he can be comfortable. Samantha had confessed to him before about her brother Brenner. That he’s why she’s in town, to talk to him. She tells him she wanted to start a program called art on wheels and Brenner was going to back her as long as she had a husband giving him a good view since he’s gay. She was set to marry his business partner Hudson but she called off the marriage so she now wants to beg for Brenner to still fund her even though she will no longer have a husband. Duke has put a lot of thought into this so at the concert he asks her to marry him. She’s confused and he asks for them to talk outside. He tells her how he knows both of them are commitment phobes so they would go into this knowingly. He would be her husband so she could still start her art program. And she asks what’s in it for him. And convenient sex is mentioned because he already told her he’s fucking her tonight. But then he tells her even though he never wanted a wife he also doesn’t want anyone else to be her husband so he’s her solution. She ends up agreeing and they get married. And they have the most magical sex either of them has ever had. Her brother calls her and tells her he heard where she’s at and to get back to Hook so that they can talk. Duke goes with her to meet with Brennan. And Brenner thinks Duke wants a part of the factory or Samantha’s business but he tells him he’s happy where he is. Dukes problem now is that he legitimately wants his wife and never thought he’d feel that way and he’s worried how he’s going to screw things up. He never wanted a relationship before after watching his dad leave his mom and then all his sisters get divorced. He watched how men are dumb and hurt women and he just knows that’s how he’d be too so he never even gave himself a chance to mess things up. Samantha never had a healthy relationship to reflect on. Her parents split. Brenner is just a step sibling who always supported her and helped her through college, their parents aren’t even together anymore but he is still a brother to her. So for this she feels as if she owes him something for all the support he’s given her. But she also finds herself wanting more with Duke but thinking she’s overstepping. While they’re at the meeting with Brenner Brenner tries to belittle Duke. And make Samantha feel dumb for choosing Duke over Hudson. And then he tells her he’ll sign over the funds for this business and all she has to do is sign the annulment papers ending her relationship with Mr Crawford (Duke). Now she’s wondering if there’s any reason for her and Duke to remain married. She had told him last night he didn’t have to marry her for the kind of no strings commitment that he wanted. So why wouldn’t he sign it? They were commitment phobes weren’t they? “I’d rather have you single than married to an employee”. He tells her it looks bad and she realizes it does look bad. Samantha tells Duke to sign it. “Let’s just end this before it ends itself”. And then brenner sends concern her direction and tells her this has nothing to do with what happened with his father. She tells him if he doesn’t want to sign first then she will, and he tells her he didn’t ask for a turn to sign. He tells her to slow down. So she snaps at him and tells him she wasn’t thinking clearly and she realizes now that he won’t be able to support her and she wants to die when she sees the look on his face like she just slapped him. And then Duke clicked the pen and wrote his name on the contract. And then Samantha flees. Brenner tells Duke that their parents had been really in love and his dad legally adopted Samantha and spent a lot of time with her because it made her mom happy and when they got divorced it got messy and he reversed the adoption and it really broke Samantha. Brenner confesses her pain is from his dad being a bastard. Brenner tells him he really thought he was doing what was best for Samantha. And then he tells Duke that he’s fired and Duke says good luck with that. So I think the fired part was a joke since he had used dukes employment as a downfall to Samantha. He’s at his home pouting and his sister come downstairs and he basically tells them to get lost. But then confesses he always knew he could never be a better man. He watched their dad and all their husbands and just knew he was bound to hurt Sam and then he didn’t even last a day with her as his wife and he just let her go without a fight and his sisters tell him he’s different than any of those men. And that they all could afford to move out they just choose to stay because he makes the house a home. So he makes a plan to win his wife back because when a women like that agrees to marry you you don’t just let her get away. Sam gets a call and thinks maybe it’s Duke but it’s river asking if she’d be willing to come to the elementary school and draw pictures for the other kids like what she did for Marcy. She’s not sure if she’s ready to come back to Hook just yet. How will Duke react to seeing her? She decides she can’t pass up this opportunity. When she gets there, the entire school yard is decorated and there’s Duke, and a banner that says “sams art day”. He put this on for her. He listened to her talk about stations so he set up art stations for her. He gave her a spot in the shade to listen to kids stories and draw them. While he did face painting. And river and his sisters did various arts and crafts with the kids. She had the best day but she still wasn’t prepared to talk to Duke. She knew she’d either be leaving with a piece of her heart broken or her head held high. She agreed to go on a walk with him and talk. They go to the church and Duke wants to talk but Sam is trying to jump him. She sucks his dick and he stops her but then she rolls a condom on him so while he’s inside of her he tells her he missed this part of her but he also missed her in his kitchen, wondered who was keeping her fed and who was keeping her safe. He tells her he wants her to move in with him and wear his ring. She tells him she’s worried about that because they’re arrangement before had a deadline and this doesn’t. His phone starts ringing but he ignores it until she tells him to answer it and it’s her brother Renner. I figured out from the audio I had been hearing his name wrong lol. A machine at the factory needs Duke, he agrees to go. He lets Sam know he had been fired last week and she knows it’s because of her. He tells her he has to go but they’re nowhere near done talking and gives her an envelope. He asks where her heart is with him and she tells him 10. When he leaves she opens it and sees their annulment papers and where his name should be it says go fuck yourself and then a ring slides out of the envelope as well. He wouldn’t let her go with him because of the danger but now she’s in rivers car and hears the explosion and all she can think is that her husband is in danger. While Duke is inside he keeps thinking how he has to live for his wife that he can’t lose her now. The firefighters go in to retrieve Duke and Sam is scared. She goes to punch her brother and miles stops her, her brothers security and says he can’t allow her to do that. And then Duke comes out and she doesn’t want to hurt him but she wants to be wrapped around him. He asks what she decided and she says yes. That she’ll move in and be his wife and she’s his. And he calls for someone to get a preacher so they can be married again knowing this is for them and not some agreement. They were 2 commitment phobes made for each other. The epilogue is 2 months later. She lives with him and all his sisters. Sam wouldn’t let them move out so she’s a part of the blow dryer schedule and they set the table for her. Duke turned the basement into an art room for her so that she could have her own space. Her brother is going to fund her traveling art business and Duke will travel with her. And she also has noticed her brother acting different and thinks it may be due to Miles, his security guard, which we know Renner is the next book!!! I’m excited but I know it’s male to male so hopefully it’s not cringey. I loved loved loved Duke and Sam. Sam came out of nowhere but still had a connection to the town through Renner. And she completely pulled Duke out of his no dating shell. Duke never thought to be the relationship type but proved to be the perfect husband right off the rip. Duke is so caring to his sisters and Marcy and Sam and it’s adorable. This big man that she draws as super heroes and everything else is the sweetest hulk you’ll ever meet. I really loved this book and the glimpses of River and Vaughn and Marcy and even the little glimpse of Sarge and his band. I can’t wait for the last book but also am not ready to leave the town of Hook just yet. Worked up is the title and I didn’t see a direct connection of that either. But I guess I would describe them as worked up towards each other. They both worked each other up so much that they broke their own no dating rules to be with one another. Or how she was the bosses sister for dukes work. Might have the connection to worked up. And how in the end she was scared of losing him at his work, and it had her worked up and ready to fully commit.

This… was not it.

I could tell it was trying to be heartfelt but it was actually just very upsetting. The actions of all of the characters in this are just crazy bananas insane. The relationship is very much insta-lust that tries to say it’s insta-love. The marriage of convenience trope which is already not a favorite of mine was executed so poorly. It was just not a good time. Read another Tessa Bailey because she has some gems and this is not one of them.

**I received a copy of Worked Up from Net Galley and Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review**

Duke works as a machinery mechanic at the local factory but he lives with his four divorcee sisters. He just wanted some peace and quiet and to end baseball at the local bar, Third Shift. When Samantha walks into the bar and starts being harassed by three mechanics, Duke reluctantly rescues her. His best friends, Vaughn, River and their four-year-old daughter, Marcy who lets his watch SportsCenter in exchange for non-organic juice boxes. I love how when Sam asks for his phone number he puts it in her phone naming himself E. Vil Gladiator.

Samantha Waverly is in town to meet with her brother, Renner, who will fund her Art on Wheels project if she marries the person of his choosing. Only thing is Samantha doesn't love Hudson and refuses to marry him. She's an illustrator for children's book who loves puns and drawing anyone with just a little bit of information, hence Gladiator Duke who rescued her. When both Duke and Samantha decide to get married in Atlantic City so that she can get the funding from her brother. Little does she know that their wedding night is a lesson in possession by Duke that will have her never wanting to leave his bed ever again. But of course in the light of day they both have to deal Renner knowing about the marriage.

This is one hot book and will have you blushing and hoping that both Duke and Samantha will be able to overcome obstacles to be together. A solid 4.9 star book!

This book just made me smile throughout the majority of the book. It centres on Duke who we have met in the previous books who meets his match with a fellow commitment phobe Sam who also happens to be his bosses sister.

I truly loved Sam and Duke they were such great personalities individually but when they came together you could truly see that they were meant for each other

Tessa has once again written a winning book, and I will definitely be picking up the next book in the series

You know what I love about these books? They get right to the sex. There is no “oh I don’t know if I should…should I? Maybe?” It’s just right to it. Very little foreplay (and I mean that in the literary sense, not the sexual sense). I loved Duke and Samantha’s story. It would probably never happen in real life but I do love a big blue collared man who can be romantic as sin. You just love to see it.
