Wow, I seriously wasn't expecting to like this book upon finishing it... right up until literally almost the end. What a magnificent and horrible story. After I painstakingly figured out who was who in the mishmash of Heathcliffs and Earnshaws and Lintons and Catherines, I was rewarded with a strong dislike for every single character* (*except one who stole my heart). They're all* petty and seemed quite contrived, until certain events turned what I thought of as Wuthering Height's unnecessary violent and unhappy embellishments into a more than adequate commentary on the mechanisms of intergenerational wealth and cycles of violence. And then, against all odds, this dense, thorny, tangled mess of a book grew itself a romantic subplot that I was very pleasantly surprised by.
Also, I was practically beside myself reading the deeply atmospheric descriptions of the moors about Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, especially because they have enriched my experience and appreciation for the spring-to-summer blooms in North Carolina.
I am excited to see what parts of this story will linger on, not unlike the unquiet slumbers of sleepers in quiet earth.
