I got a lot more out of this book the second time around, though much of it is still opaque. The middle section are poems about her daughter, and I think the third section are poems in response to what comes earlier. The first section includes poems that engage with literature, personal history, and other topics. This will be a book I keep coming back to, to see what else it comes to mean.

2014/2015 Read:

I still feel like a novice when it comes to poetry. In this collection of poetry by Karen Brennan there were several poems that were open to possible meanings, but several that were more opaque. Some of the most touching poems are about her daughter Rachel and the aftermath of a terrible accident. Not knowing many of the details of this part of her life (which is covered in her memoir "Being with Rachel," which I have not read), these poems still evoke something of the love Karen has for her daughter, and often give a good sense of place, as well. The language is wonderful to read out loud, and I hope someday to revisit these poems with more focus.
