This book had slow plotting and flowery writing. Lots of conversations revolving around race. This story was a slow burn that didn’t pick up until the end. I was patient with the plot but felt like it left something to be desired. I wanted more subplots to fatten out the storylines but this book was mostly okay while focusing on world building and set up. The reveals at the end were less than exciting. Despite this being a lackluster read, I’ll still be reading the sequels when I have time for it.

I enjoyed this book but honestly there was not much happening, description were great but there was a lot of it , univers was cool , new Orléans setting , romance was cute , females characters are great. But there was no world building , I did not understand the supernatural stuff , there was not enough explications , world building is lacking

2 stars. Wasn’t awful but damn was it extremely boring. I honestly can’t recall any of the characters names and I just finished this freakin’ book. It’s long, dry and a bit aimless for a good majority of it. However, I do think the last 2-3 chapters really picked up and I did really like how this ended and am interested in book two just because of that. I wasn’t expecting it to end like that so that was a nice surprise. Also, the writing is gorgeous. I love Ahdieh’s writing style, her books after her Wrath & The Dawn series have been flops for me story and character wise but her writing is always so gorgeous. Fingers crossed that the second book is much better.
