Recent Reads: Beyond The Empire. The final part of KB Wagers' political space opera sends Hail back to her home world on the trail of the enigmatic Wilson. Conspiracies unravel as fleets converge and civil war rages. Can Hail recover her throne and rebuild a fractured empire?

I read and enjoyed the first two books in this series (with some caveats) so I was interested to see how Wagers was going to finish out her first trilogy. Unfortunately this just didn't land for me. It was just not well written (and it really pains me to say that). Not only are people laughing and grinning their way through all the dialogue on almost every page (I mean, people "bare their teeth" four times in the first 60 pages), but it reads like sitting in on a planning session of an RPG. The characters sit around talking about what they know, don't know, and plan to do...and don't really do anything until the very end of the book. With a cast of dozens of interchangeable characters rotating in and out of scenes and just talking and talking I think I could have skipped to page 300 and not missed much.

On the bright side there were some memorable moments, good scenes, and one character death that really bummed me out. The end was fairly action packed and fun, but it comes so late in the game that by then I had mostly checked out. I still like many of the side characters, and the world building, but this book didn't highlight either particularly well - most of the book took place on ships and focused on political strategizing instead of character growth. This book will likely hold more appeal to those who are invested in politics and military sci-fi. I really enjoyed the second book in this series, but I think this will likely be my last Wagers book despite how much I enjoy her as a human being.

Loved it! I stayed up far too late into the night finishing this, and it was totally worth it. I love that the main plotlines were wrapped up but the story remains open-ended enough that anything could happen. Looking forward to the second trilogy!

Most of the third book was engaging and page-turning, but the conclusion felt a bit weak to me. Wilson started off as an intriguing opponent in this massive war, but I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief at the reason he would murder the queen’s daughters and granddaughter, support an intergalactic war, and allow thousands of innocents to get slaughtered in the wake of it all. Maybe I could have bought into it had Wagers fleshed out Wilson’s motivations better, but the entire reason for the central conflict just fell flat for me. That said, most of the book kept up with the exciting adventure through space that the second one was and I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of the book.

This whole series was a fun & engaging quick read (I stayed up past 2 in the morning to finish the last book). It's always fun to read something with a kick-ass female protagonist, if you need an action-packed sci-fi fix I'd highly recommend this series.

What a great conclusion to this trilogy!

It was action packed, with political intrigue, and lots of space battles! This is a series that I really enjoyed. The characters were relatable and I really enjoyed their relationships. The world created was really cool and I liked how political change was brought about. The main character wasn't afraid of change and really was a badass - yet accepted her weaknesses and worked through them.

I really enjoyed the writing as well. It was easy to read, not overly descriptive and had me wanting more.

Overall, this is a fun space adventure, with a kick ass heroine and I will definitely be reading more from this author!
