A goat, a baby and two men travelling a post-apocalyptic fantasy world where men and women are treated the same and with zero homophobia is exactly what I've been looking for. For me it's a very character driven book because other then the characters you're not supposed to like, I really liked every one they met along the way. And the trio themselves- Vagrant, Harm and Vesper, even the goat, had one of the best relationships I've read about in a fantasy. The plot however I still haven't quite grasped which is why I marked it down, other then that this book was so good.

The book isn't badly written.  The pacing is slow which doesn't bother me, but the story just wasn't for me.

Truly an extraordinary debut book with a fleshed out world and an interesting set of characters.

A fascinating read, quite different from many of the fantasy and sci-fi books I've encountered before. The story-telling is very strong. Newman weaves the past throughout the present, seamlessly developing the context necessary to understand the world while we follow the Vagrant's adventures. The characters are well developed, despite the fact that the protagonist speaks only one word in the entire book. I was unsure at first about this muteness, but Newman demonstrated quickly how apt he is at showing rather than telling, allowing the Vagrant's actions and emotions to speak louder than any words. Of all the characters, though, I particularly loved the goat. And no, it is not an unusual name - I mean the literal goat that joins the Vagrant's travels and who provides many humorous moments among the dark and brutal tale of destruction.
