I received a free copy of this book from A Novel Take PR and am voluntarily reviewing it.

When I read the blurb for this one, it sounded like such a great read that I immediately requested a copy. It was a bit of an impulse request, but I am so glad I did as I really enjoyed this book. It's one of the longest books I read in a long time (it's 764 pages according to Goodreads!), but that was great as it meant I could spend more time being immersed in this world and reading about these characters. If you love fantasy worlds, dragons, dragon riders and slow burn MM romances, I would definitely recommend this one.

Wild Sky is told from two point of views. We have Tauran, who was a dragon rider once, but after the death of his dragon he isn't in a good place. His old general contacts him one day and asks him to come back to be a dragon rider, he refuses, but eventually finds himself back in the city Valreus where the dragon riders live eventually and there he meets Kalai. Kalai went in search for adventure and ends up in Valreus too. Where he's from dragons roam free, but in Valreus only dragon riders can own a dragon. And Kalai has taken his dragon with him to Valreus. It's hard to fully explain the scope of the story as that is only the beginning. There are so many twists and turns in this story and different directions than I had expected, but it's hard to really hint at that as I don't want to give anything away.

This is a beautifully slow paced story. And I mean slow pace in the best way possible, there is all this build up for later plot lines or plot points early on and I love seeing everything develop and change. And there is so much you see change and develop over the course of the story. I really like the long length of this book as it really gave the author the chance to dig deep into all of this and show the developments everywhere and in everyone. There is the romance between Kalai and Tauran. There is the whole political/ dragon situation in Valreus. There are the wild dragons. There is Leyra, seeing her develop over the course of the book was great. And then there are other side characters and plot points and it was just one big awesome read.

I really had a great time reading this book. The build up and then later development of all the plot points and characters was really well done. The story is slow paced, but there is always something happening or going on. And multiple plot lines that are progressing slowly throughout the whole book. At times it can be hard as it takes sometimes a long time before a certain plot point develops, but I liked it overall and didn't get too inpatient. There is a bit of tension with earlier set-up for future troubles, but it takes a while for that set-up to pay off.

I really liked the characters in this book. They all feel real and act in a way that makes sense given their personality. Tauran is this physically strong dragon rider who now has a limp and even some big fears he struggles with. He still cares a lot about the dragons and the dragon riders and I enjoyed seeing his character develop throughout the book and have him face his fear and also enjoy life again. Then there is Kalai who wanted adventure and gets so much more than he bargained for. I liked both different these two were from another and had a different outlook or way of dealing with things, but they also agreed on a lot. They both really care about the dragons for example.

The romance was awesome! I really liked how this was set-up, there is that initial spark already, but it builds very slowly. It felt very natural and real. I liked how at a certain point they profess their interest, but they don't immediately fall in bed together. In fact this 764 pages long book has only two sex scenes if you can call them that, it sort of plays out, but you don't get any details. And I actually quite liked this here as it fit the story. Their feelings grow deeper first and even later it's more about how they feel and care about each other than lust. I really felt the connection between these two. I also thought it was fitting they also take time to get physical once they're safe. I also appreciated how they dealt with conflict in a way that made sense and felt realistic instead of it turning into drama or conflict made larger than it had to be. I loved how these two had each others back even in the tough times. It really was clear how much they care for one another.

Besides the two main characters there is quite the large cats of characters, but they're all introduced in such a way it never gets confusing who is who and there are some awesome side characters. They all have a role to play in the story even tough some characters play a smaller role than others. There are also plenty of characters who keep showing up throughout the whole book and even important side characters that get introduced later in the book. Arrow was awesome and ofcourse Leyra, we see so much of how she develops in the book. But really I liked most of the characters and even the ones I didn't like felt realistic.

The ending is pretty awesome. I like how it all felt in tune and fit the style of the book and the epilogue was awesome. There are some minor plot threads left open, but the ending felt satisfactory.

The world building is great too, most of the focus is on the country where Valreus is, but we get to see some of the Sharoani as well. I liked seeing how the dragon riders were part of ti all and how the dragons were treated differently in Sharoani. There were a few small niggles I had with words that seemed a bit out of place, like they mention puppy behavior or fawn colored scales, but as far as I know there are no puppies or fawn in the world. The world really comes to live especially as it's such a long book and it was great to spend so much time in this world.

To summarize: This was an awesome fantasy book with dragons and a slow burn romance. It's a long and slowly paced read, but I mean this in the best possible way and it fit the story. There is so much that happens in this book, but it's all set-up slowly. There are hints and set-ups early on that only later develop. And there are these big developments and changes throughout the whole book. There are twists and turns and it's all a riveting story. This book had my attention from start to finish and I loved losing myself in this world and spending time with the characters. The characters were awesome and I loved how realistic they all felt. The romance is great too, it's a slow burn with the focus being on their love and deepening relationship rather than the physical side of things. I really liked these two together and how there were there for one another and I how they dealt with things. There is almost no drama or conflict between them and what conflict there was, was dealt with in a way that made sense for the characters. The side characters all were well done too and felt like real people. And the dragons! The dragons were awesome. I liked the world building and how we got a feel for the world and got to spend time in it and see things change. All in all this was an awesome fantasy book and if you like dragons, dragon riders and slow burn romances I would definitely recommend it.

This book was everything to me and more. Tauran and Kalai are such sweet hearts that go through their own slew of problems. And yet they find their way back together time and time again.

Tauran
Not going to lie I was worried about his characterization at first. A man who was hurt and his dragon killed, seemingly uncaring of the world around him anymore. It's been done, many, many times, and sometimes, it was not done well. But from the get-go you could tell that somewhere deep down he did still care. He was just frightened, frightened of the same thing happening again. He has a fully understandable fear of heights now. He leaned on it when needed, but he didn't fully let it stop him, he still did the things he needed to do. His fear of heights, his fear of riding a dragon again, his fear of loving again were all obstacles that he managed to overcome without the author making them null and void.

“You’re not hurting it,” Kalai assured him. He pushed the egg gently back toward him and shifted to sit beside him. Warmth radiated from Tauran’s body. “You saved it.” Tauran stared at him, sky-blue eyes wide as teacups. Slowly, his breathing settled and his shoulders dropped. “Okay.”

Even from the very beginning Tauran could not let his love of dragon's go. He has some very serious PTSD that he has to get over, and it's shown with care throughout the entire book. It didn't feel disingenuous when those topics were brought up. They were serious mountains that he had to climb, and he didn't always get it right the first time. But with help and a little love, he managed to start scaling all of those problems.

Kalai
Absolute sweetest bean that there ever was. He has his own problems, a mysterious sickness that didn't allow him to do a full range of things. He tried to not let it stop him, but time and time again the people around him put it in his mind that he was lesser. That he couldn't do those things. Arguably some of them were things he shouldn't do, but all the same. People are fucking awful.

Once, he’d entertained the company of a particularly pleasant young man for almost half a year, until the day Kalai had an episode in front of him, and the boy Kalai thought he could share everything with had told him he no longer wanted to see him, because he was afraid to be alone together. “What if you hurt yourself badly?” he’d asked. “I can’t be responsible for that.”

Hi i'd like to meet this young man and punch him through the stomach for this. No wonder Kalai got a wee bit fucked up if this is how the people around him are going to treat him. This made me so unreasonably angry. Kalai is a ball of sunshine and should not be treated like this, fortunately, Tauran knows better.

Story
The story itself was so, so good. The two of them managed to lean on each other for support during their darkest hours. They learned to be people that each other needed. Then you insert the dragons and good fucking lord, i'm gone. Arrow and Leyra are two of the cutest dragons I did ever see y'all. They were there for their riders, they were their for each other, they were there for all dragonkind.

Along with this comes the plot of the the Sky Guard and the potential war that Tauran and Kalai find themselves smack dab in the middle of. I wasn't entirely sure how it was all going to play out in the end, there were a lot of options running through my mind, but the resolution to the all encompassing struggle in this book was a very pleasant one.

There was really only one thing that I didn't like about this book, and it wasn't even plot or character related at all. Though not common, there were definitely proofreading errors in the book. One that did take me out of the experience for a bit was where one sentence was cut off, obviously meant to be fully deleted as it appeared in the sentence after. Other than that huge one, it was just small errors here and there that were mostly easy to look over.

I want more honestly. It ended happily and the epilogue was very cute, but I want to know what happens after all is said and done. Frankly, I just want more Kalai, Tauran, Arrow, and Leyra because they're all so fucking cute. There were also a few loose ends that didn't necessarily get tied up, but the way that it was played out didn't make me super upset towards it. More like an open-ended what if.

This book is incredible and is definitely worth a read. One of my top books of the year for certain

Wild sky is epic adventurous fantasy book that have some of my fave dragons. The dynamic between dragons and their riders was just so beautiful and precious. Tauren and  kalai were complex beings tackling with their baggage and disabilities and found a home within each other. Their love and trust for each other was another my favorite thing about this book. Sometimes this book book quite slow and felt like dragging just that the thing bothered me. And that ending?? It left me with alot of questions.

This book was such a fun read. We follow the story of Tauran, a former sky guard flyer after the death of his dragon during the Battle of the Skies, and Kalai, travelling from Sharoani with his dragon Arrow to explore the world. Tauran is left physically and emotionally broken after the fight and ends up back in the city of Valreus, a place he never wanted to return, after his old captain tracker him down and his inn caught fire. Tauran and Kalai meet and a relationship blooms between them as they discover secrets around the circumstances of Kalai's hiring and the increasing aggression of wild dragons.

I think I want to get the negatives out of the way first because this book was so much fun to read and was very well written. However, the 2 main issues I had which really could have easily not happened were that my edition of the book had a physical fault where the pages were cut on a slant near the end of the book at the bottom, which I found to be a very strange defect. Also, for my book at least, while the writing was really well done and felt really nice to read, there were quite a number of errors, including random letters, missing quotations, words missing, or even half sentences in places they didn't belong at all. It almost seemed like I got a beta version made from cheap equipment, not a final product, even though the story, plotting, and everything else felt like a final product.

With that aside, this book was such an interesting and fun time to read (albeit stressful at times). The world building went at a nice pace, and we learnt so much without any of it really ebbing told, but shown, sometimes in small, subtle places. The only time we really were told things was when one of the characters was reading or being told it, so it felt a natural part of the story. There was so much set up, countries that clearly already existed and had history, and we just stepped into a point in time of a story that clearly had already existed before you jump into it. It makes me very curious as to the authors intentions going forward - will this story continue at all? Will we follow other people, or explore some of the other countries that were only briefly mentioned but have such potential for further storytelling? I for one would love to see so much more of the world which Feli only hinted at.

Our two MCs were such complex characters with complex thoughts, motives, drives, traumas, and not only were they interesting people on their own, their love story was so endearing, sweet, painful, and beautiful. I knew it was a slow-burn going in, and by 100 pages I figured out what kind of slow-burn it was going for. Their interactions, support for each other, their beautiful words and reassurances, their personal strengths and their complimentary natures was so well written and displayed in this book. You truly felt like they meant every declaration of love that you read, because you could see it without having to be told, and I loved watching these two people love each other and support each other so fiercely throughout the book. I was kind of expecting more heat in the book, if I'm honest, and you do get 2 scenes between them but nothing is explicitly stated. I am very relieved we did get something by the end of the book - ngl, I was getting a little nervous by the last few chapters.

The plot of the book was not always the focus, a lot of the book, especially the first half, revolved around the relationships between Tauran and Kalai, with Leyra, and dealing with their trauma. But when the plot did pick up in sections, it had me on the edge of my seat and nervous, because the stakes get very high, and seeing the desperation that these characters go through is tough, but the way they grow from their hardships is so rewarding. I'm being purposefully vague so I don't have to hide this review due to spoilers, but even when the plot doesn't really drive the story, the characters certainly do.

And finally, the dragons. I really loved all of the time we spent learning about dragons, about their history, about their personalities and how they are raised, about the intrigue in the story with the wild dragons and the Sharoani way of raising them. Kalai works to translate old Sharoani text, and the little bits of information we get through him really intrigued me about them. I loved Arrow and Leyra, and watching them grow up and interact with each other, with the other dragons, and especially with Tauran and Kalai was so sweet. Many people talk about how they seem like puppies, and I definitely agree, but as a cat person myself, the little hunting mannerisms and sounds and chirps they make very much reminded me of cats, and I loved to see that personality in them. They seem like such amazing creatures.

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience reading this. The story and world building and characters were fantastic, I just wish my book itself was a little better put together and edited. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in dragons or adorable but scarred boys who love each other.
