Very interesting piece of literature, however I think many of the important facts and entries were ommited because of confidentiality. Shame.

It’s both wonderful and frustrating that her husband edited her diary for us. There is so much missing, and you can’t help but wonder at certain points if she would agree with what was cut, or even, what was left in (I am aware that her diaries have been published in uncut form as well, but I am specifically referring to this work as I read it). Read continuously, it is often tedious and repetitive, because, as anyone who’s ever kept a journal knows, each life has its themes that it keeps returning to, over and over, impossible to escape.

Woolf was a writer of psychological fiction, and she is at her best here when describing the psychological aspect of what it means to be a writer. There were so many times when I felt like, oh yes, I know just what you are saying, there, and it’s a pretty awesome thing to feel a connection with VW. All in all, you don’t get the questions answered that you sought when you picked this up, mainly, the secret of what a great writer’s life is like, or maybe the tabloid answer of why she took her life. But you get other questions answered instead, some of which you didn’t know needed answering. One thing is clear from all these musings, day after day, year after year. A writer’s mind is never quite comfortable, never able to let go of the words that are always there, whether reading writing or thinking.

Clearly, I'm not reading this at the moment so it goes to the dnf-for-the-time-being pile. I'm definitely coming back to this, but not in the mood for it right now.

(Started 25.12.2023, stopped on p.112 <- Just in case GR forgets it again...)

Many insightful and poignant sections.
However, I also found it very monotonous in parts and a bit fragmented which makes sense given its extracts edited by L Woolf. Still, more of a one-time read for me.
