Started good. Was very easy to follow and had a very interesting premise. I actually enjoyed the story and the world but had issues with other things.
The love story is lacking… there was no real tension or build up. They barely spent any time together to have any real tension. It started at almost a slow burn pace and then suddenly… fireworks. Ugh.
My biggest gripe was with the FMC. It’s fine to be rebellious, spirited, brave etc… but it’s idiotic to try to act out and speak out all the damn time and put so much more at risk than getting a few spiteful words in. It’s both reckless and stupid. I found myself losing respect for FMC over the course of the book and growing increasingly irritated. She may be “brave” but she is pathetically naive and moronic. The fact that plot armor kept saving her from her dumb decisions irritated me further. The few times she was reprimanded for her idiocy she clearly never learned from it.
There are flawed characters who grow and then there are invincible characters who carry flaws like a badge of honor and never seem to learn from them or improve. Plot armor saved her more times than I would have liked.
Despite all that, I will say there was no real slow moments and the ending was a surprise. I just could not move passed the number of character and relationship flaws I felt could be flushed out further or rectified altogether to make sense in such a divided world.
