I really liked this one! For a mystery/thriller, I found it to be incredibly unique. Just before reading this, I had finished another thriller and was thinking to myself about how I was getting a little tired of the monotony that seems to be plaguing the genre currently, and then this came along. It was the breath of fresh air that I needed.

I’ll admit - at first, I was a little bored. While I was really intrigued by the description of Katrina’s “kitchen door world”, I was quickly becoming concerned that that was going to be the majority of the book. That was not the case. Dong was just setting the scene for us so that we could have an understanding on how Katrina is operating in the world and her unique way of seeing things due to an underlying, unnamed mental illness. Once we have a grasp on it, the story takes off, and I couldn’t put it down.

Katrina quickly unravels the mystery of her strange coworker, Kurt, and I thought it was well-paced and timed with the release of information to the reader. I always needed to know what happened next, and was genuinely creeped out at times. I had some weird dreams while I was reading this! I also never knew what to believe - could we trust Katrina’s account on events? Is this magical world she sees somehow real and only available to her?

I didn’t expect it to go the way it did and I was surprised a few times. The ending was tidy and I was satisfied. I liked how Katrina found a way to use her mental illness as a sort of gift to untangle the mess that had formed around her.

If you’ve been a bit bored by thrillers lately or just want to read something new and different, I highly recommend you give this one a try!
