The first book I’ve ever read in verse, that I recall, and I must say the writing is absolutely impeccable. I loved this. This is what I messaged my friends after finishing it:
“Also final verdict on Toffee (the book I was reading) DEFINITELY recommend. It deals with some really heavy content, but it is so well balanced with humour and hope and love that I didn’t need to stop and put it down and step away at all throughout, the way I normally do when reading emotionally heavy material. So freakin’ good. And it handles the heavy content really well too! It felt really honest, and genuine, and not rushed over or brushed past“

This is such a powerful book in verse. Allison needs Marla just like Marla needs Allison--together, they're able to work toward a place of happiness. When Allison runs away from her abusive father, she finds Marla's house. There, she's able to become Toffee and forget about her past for a while.
The overall structure works really well for this book. There are a few times where it felt like it lost its voice, but it found it again. A really compelling story overall.
