Admittedly, I probably should have read this novel before the other two in the series because man a bunch of things connected. Though, it is certainly not required. Neil changes so much between this novel and Just for the Summer that I did not realize it was the same character at first. I will say that I hadn't picked up the novel first because I thought the title was cheesy (even though it is very fitting for the trope.)
I did really enjoy the novel. Daniel is so unbelievably kind, and it goes to show that Abby Jimenez does not miss in writing a man. He is caring and forgiving and open to a serious relationship despite his own trauma. Alexis is very complex. She has severe boundary issues and has trouble putting herself first, but she has such a good heart and wants the best for everyone around her. It makes her character interesting, but her lack of boundaries got on my last nerves sometimes. Like girl, you are 38 years old. I understand staying in the toxic relationship, but is your therapist not telling you to at least set boundaries with your parents?
I will say, the villains in this novel (Alexis' father, friends, and Neil) are the most terrible terribly people to ever terrible. They all deserve one star reviews for being pretentious, egotistical, selfish losers. Honestly wretched people. I can not believe the novel gave Neil a sort-of redemption arc after he SHUT THE POWER OFF AT THE HOUSE OUT OF SPITE.
The novel was, at its core, very heartfelt. I appreciated Bri acknowledging Alexis' difficulty choosing herself in a kind, empathetic way at the end of the novel. It was especially tender hearing Alexis receive the love and support that she gave Liz earlier in the novel when Liz was struggling to leave her abuser, Jake. The way the two moments tied together was like a perfectly wrapped present.
Overall, I very much enjoyed the novel. It is great if you love a small town romance with characters with complex personalities. Romance novels have really carried me through bar prep this month.
