As usual, Kleypas never misses! This novel was basically grumpy x sunshine, which is one of my favorite tropes. Kleypas always has a beautiful way of showing just how walls you put up against the world can go down for the right person.

I saw a comment online calling Grant “essentially a Victorian incel” and nothing has ever been more true. Being inside this man’s head was just awful. A piece of shit through and through!

3.5/5 It was a little problematic but boy was I hooked. I just wish grant was redeemed a little more. Like I feel he didn't really learn anything. He just does stuff or doesn't do stuff because he loves Victoria. And I also wish Vivien would have been written differently. Sits weird with me that the woman who likes sex is "bad" and the virginal sister is like, worth loving. But despite my issues I had a hard time putting it down. The pacing was good and the reveals were good. And I love Victoria and get why Grant will protect her at all costs.

I DNF’ed this book, which I’m shocked by. I love Kleypas and normally devour her books, but this one had a real “jump the shark” moment that left me confused and not wanting to finish, so I gave it up.

If you like any early 90s soap opera, this is the book for you. We’ve got twists and turns and fake outs and all kinds of drama, and in the midst of it all, a reluctant MMC who just can’t help himself from falling in love with his “sworn enemy”.

It’s a bit over the top, but it’s also historical romance so we all know what we’re getting into.

This book was hard for me to get through. There was not enough build up to this story.
