Fun, quirky book with a unique style of writing. Unfiltered with humour and content and full of moments where you question why some things aren’t talked about more openly. However I did get a little bored of the story midway before it picked up again. The best friend, Annie, was a little too annoying with her one track mind on just becoming popular. I do understand at that age, we are all annoying, but it was just a tad too much on that front.

As mentioned by other reviewers, this book makes us look at "taboo" topics and shows us how we can be open about it. Periods are a natural occurence and shouldn't be shamed but I dont really see how calling period products like "sanitary pads" is an issue. Also the show of feminism and mysogeny was good but too in your face about it. I feel like it was a little too forced and OTT.

I do want to keep in mind though that I am not the intended audience for this book and maybe these topics have to be made more obvious for younger readers so that they themselves can identify these issues in real life. But I do have a gripe with the police officers just being Dumb and Dumber.

Anyways, it was entertaining but it wasnt for me .

“I am strong and empowered, the patriarchy is but shit upon my shoe, good morning to all….” ❤️

I received this book as a dARC from NetGalley and I’m so glad I did!  Kate did a wonderful job of putting together a mix of mystery, humor and pop culture.  I loved the shout outs to feminism and equality.  The book gave me strong Pretty Little Liar and Murder in the Building vibes.

The story itself was well written, had a couple of points that got a little slow but overall kept my attention well.  I was able to figure out pieces of the mystery on my own but the complete ending was still a surprise which I enjoy.

DID NOT FINISH

I had a very difficult time meshing with this book. I think the humor wasn’t for me or maybe it felt a bit too middle school? It just made me cringe too hard whenever I read it and I ultimately couldn’t finish the book. Thanks to netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley, HarperCollins, and the author for providing this ARC for review!

Kerry & Annie are best friends who are obsessed with mysteries and true crime. When they agree to help a popular girl at a party, they find her best friend dead - the first of a string of murders. They navigate cliques, teen romance, and the patriarchy to solve the mystery and identify the serial killer!

What I loved:
  • The feminism! I loved that Kerry and Annie are checking anyone who is casually misogynistic or tries to dismiss them because they are teenage girls.
  • The twist! This was a satisfying mystery, very much in the vein of Miss Marple or Sherlock Holmes.
  • The romance! Kerry and Scott are verrry cute.
What I didn't love:
  • Lack of a definite setting - this book had a combination of American teenage tropes and British-isms, leaving me very confused about where this story was unfolding. Specifically - if this is the UK, I don't believe they have years like "junior" and I don't believe people under 18 can drive; if this is the US, we would call them "towns" not "villages," we call our police officers "Officer [name]" or "Detective [name]" not "DI [name]," and we have the FBI and CIA, not MI5 or MI6.
  • The title - I would say that there is so much more to this mystery than the fact that the characters are in school. The fact that the title isn't a period pun is a shame.
