Love this book. What a great reminder of all the things we fail to notice about Jesus. Yancy is such a humble writer who struggles with his faith like everyone else and isn't afraid to ask questions and dive deep into who God is and how he loves us through Jesus.
Definitely a different perspective on who Jesus was and how modern, western Christians try to box him into certain categories to fit their views. And how he would probably be just as disregarded in today's world as he was back then.
I was reading too many other books and got busy. I was only one chapter in, so I plan to read it for real soon!
Reading the gospels themselves straight through was the most productive way toward this title. I did highlight a lot I’d like to go back and review and there are a lot of quotable section and quoted authors and stories I enjoyed. The first three/fourths seemed edited more tightly then the last for some reason. The last fourth was a little harder to get through.

I paid for a discounted copy. I really enjoyed this book, it gave me food for thought and gave alternate views what seemed to me to be a fair treatment.

This book is only useful for people who believe wholeheartedly in modern Christianity. I’m not sure who the author was writing for, but his mission to “uncover” Jesus from another angle is severely lacking. It’s very superficial, and often peppered with subjective statements being presented as fact.
My review of this book is on my Jesus in Books podcast: http://jesusinbooks.com/the-jesus-i-never-knew-by-philip-yancey/
With the help of the book I also synthesize a list of reasons why Jesus would be "unemployable" in today's job market.
