I read this for a Lenten study class - he is a very good writer. Gives you many things to consider....
Really enjoyed some of the insights Yancey dove into here by looking merely at the text of the Scriptures and throwing away all of our preconceptions about the Person of Jesus.
“Books of theology tend to define God by what he is not: God is immortal, invisible, infinite. What is God like, positively? For the Christian, Jesus answers all such all-important questions. The apostle Paul boldly called Jesus ‘the image of the invisible God.’ Jesus was God‘s exact replica: ‘For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him.’ God is, in a word, Christlike. Jesus presents a God with skin on whom we can take or leave, love or ignore. In this visible, scaled-down model we can discern God‘s features more clearly.”
This book does just that: help us discern God’s features (in Jesus) more clearly. Good read.

A very concise, and insightful, look at the character of Jesus, based primarily on the four Gospels (as opposed to the epistles, etc). Like Jesus himself, the book takes aim at subsequent church dogma and tradition, showing where it is, and often is not, on track with how he is shown to be in the gospels themselves. Very interesting book, a fast, and fascinating, read. I came a way much better for it, I think. Highly recommend this.
I really appreciated this new perspective on Jesus' perspective, especially the parts about how his Jewish culture affected him. As a person of color, I appreciated someone highlighting the importance of Jesus' race and culture as a part of his identity, and it made me feel like Jesus was more relatable to the everyday struggles I have with racism and multiculturalism.
I thought this was such a great book. It really challenged my thinking about Jesus by pointing me back to what we actually know about Jesus from the Bible. It gave me great perspective on what Jesus was like and what mattered to him and challenged me to live more like him and that is quite different from some of the stereotypes presented by society and church as well.

I really like this book! It was good to get a different perspective on Jesus. Especially three part about Jesus not condemning the sick, shutting down comparison between sin and sickness.
Rereading- the last chapter makes it the entire book worth my time.
This is an outstanding book. Philip Yancey reflects on our preconceived inklings of Jesus and how his own perception of jesus changed through his life. It made me reflect on my own understanding. One of my top favorite christian books. My favorite quote (well, one of them) :
"Why am I a Christian? I sometimes ask myself, and to be perfectly honest the reasons reduce to two: (1) the lack of good alternatives, (2) Jesus. Brilliant, untamed, tender, creative, slippery, irreducible, paradoxically humble--Jesus stands up to scrutiny. He is who I want my God to be."
HE IS WHO I WANT MY GOD TO BE.
