Repeat after me: MERCENARY LIBRARIANS
Generally a good post-apocalyptic ensemble heist-type story with a splash of romance.
The big drawback is the FMC. It's not that she's unlikeable, but she's basically perfect and entirely unbelievable. Beautiful, deadly, capable, smart, idealistic, trusting, loyal, etc etc.
The rest of the crew is much more flawed and more realistic in a sci-fi future that includes super-soldiers and clones.
I think this is a good set-up novel for the rest of couples, and the overarching storyline was planned and established early on, not something that was cobbled together after the first book.

This was one heck of a ride! Action, romance, and bad ass ladies? Hell yeah! This was a fun read and I had a good time reading this. My favorite aspect of the book would have to be the relationship between Nina, Dani, and Maya. I really loved their sisterly bonding and the friendship they share. The story switches POVs between multiple characters from both Nina's team and Knox's. Knox, aka the love interest, was an interesting character and yes I am not the biggest fan of insta-love but it was fine. I was definitely interested in Maya and Dani's possible love interest interactions though and can't wait to read more about them. The plot wraps up nicely and sets up for the next character's journey, which I can't wait to read. Overall I had fun reading this book and I am absolutely invested in the sisterly relationship these ladies share and can't wait to read more about their relationships in the future books!

I'm not going to bother with much of a review here, because I really don't have much to say about this book. It was frustratingly, agonizingly slow, and although I considered DNFing it several times it was never quite so bad that I wanted to quit. I pressed on in the hopes that it would get better, hit the climax of the book roughly 60% in...and it kept going on and on and on. I pretty well skimmed the last 20% just to get a rough idea of how it would end. And it ended pretty much exactly how I expected. To say Deal with the Devil is uneven is an understatement, to make it even more burdensome, there's no real stakes despite all the various conflicts. This is the very definition of a blah read.
I liked it! I don't really know how much the librarian element came in to play, but you know what, I'm not mad at this book. It's steamy, it's trope-y, but dang it, sometimes that's what I want to read.
4.5 stars, actually.
Oh I've been waiting for this book. Kit Rocha's Original sector series, the O'Kanes' Beyond, was too much for me (a bit too dominant/group for HEA me) but there was no denying the richly drawn world they'd created. And when I first encountered Gideon's Riders, set in the same world but more focused on couples, I fell in love.
And now they've expanded that universe a little more (why yes I did catch the shout out to the O'Kanes liquor, thank you very much) to include genetic experiments on supersoldiers and an evil tech company with its own private army in an post-apocalyptic world.
We have lovable and quirky band of genetically modified women: Nina the leader and fighter, Maya the brains, and Dani the cold-blooded killer. They get hired by a group of ex-soldiers called the Silver Devils to go after an exploded cache of old-world books-- a library-- in a sketchy pact that brings the two groups together on an extended truck drive through wild territory. The Silver Devils is lead by Captain Knox, the honorable assassin, and contains brain Conall, super-strong rake Rafe, and deadly assassin Grey.
I usually hate, hate, hate POV switches, but we get multiple POVs here of the two gangs alternating, and in usual Kit Rocha fashion I fell in love with them all. Rocha just excels at creating quirky characters all who are strong and vulnerable in their own ways, steamy situations laden with emotions, and fun battle scenes. And great banter :)
This book does a terrific job of setting up the post-apocalyptic scene and introducing us to the main players and soon-to-be couples. Finest in steamy escapist sci-fi thriller adventures, will definitely pick up the next one!

I loved this one! Mercenary Librarians???? Yesssss pleassssse! I can't wait for the next installment!
This is a really fun concept for a series. I love post-apocalyptic settings! I love badass soldier types and alpha holes. I think, had I read this book back in 2010 I would have been absolutely RAVENOUS for it! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed myself, and I am interested in the other 2 books in the trilogy. I just wasn't as invested in these two main characters as I would like to be.
Nina is the leader of her little girl gang of vigilante librarians. Knox is the leader of his little guy gang of vigilante soldiers. They might as well be fated mates, but those don't exist in this universe. But Nina's girl gang? I love them!
The world building and technology discussed in this book is super interesting. So if badasses reading through the apocalypse are your jam, this is the series for you.
