I LOVED the musical so much that I finally sat down to read the book. It was enjoyable but A LOT different than the musical. Much of the middle was...weird, we'll say, and not necessarily compelling, either. It dragged a bit in sections 3 and 4, but overall was worthy read.

2.5 rounded down. This book turned out to be so boring for me, despite my love of all things Wizard of Oz and the musical adaptation. It also often to me felt like one of those books where a male author writes female characters in really weird, fetish kind of ways.

A splendid job of creating a fictional land. A great job at making us rethink the classic story of OZ. I did not like it because it was twisted and depraved. I'm not certain but I think in the orgy scene a tiger rapes a man. Don't have your kids read it thinking it will be like the musical.

I find it interesting to read the other side of a classic story. To see the villains side of things. It shows that there is no clear cut good or evil, that there's a little bit of both in everyone and sometimes it's just the circumstances of life that lead to one being more prominent than the other.

The religious overtones are told more than shown, and it jumps around a bit in confusing ways but it's an interesting read for nostalgia at the very least. Entertaining and sometimes funny.
