Unfortunately, I didn’t love this.
Overall I was very into the plot but it just didn’t hit the mark for me. I really should have known by the Colleen Hoover blurb on the front cover. :(
I used the audiobook version and didn’t love the person narrating Calvin. Honestly I believe the writing had a lot to do with it- “blue, blue eyes” got on my last nerve.
All of the subplots with other characters were interesting but in the end they really didn’t add anything to the story which was annoying.
In my opinion there wasn’t enough focus on the specifics on Calvin as a serial killer & Grace as a serial killer. All of that info is just slammed into the last couple of chapters with no elaboration. The initial buildup of the story was very slow so I think there could have been less “filler” information and more about the killers themselves.
The setting would have been interesting but it felt like the author just picked a few trigger words to use in order to make the reader know this was a small town/ country environment. I think it was a little over done as well.
Not sure if I’ll try more from this author. ✍🏻

okay i stopped reading this midway when it expired on libby but i finished it because i was bored and it’s an easy audiobook and i didn’t care about it at ALL. in fact i sort of hated the guy, calvin, like i couldn’t stand his voice (his audiobook voice but also his character voice. sorry audiobook man) and i thought he was a weird freak ass. HOWEVER i held on to reading because i wanted to see if the twist was worth it.
the payoff took a long time but actually it was a lot better than i thought? but also it felt almost too much out of left field in a way? i’m not sure how i feel. the end reveal was crazy for a lot of reasons and a lot of things clicked into place.
was the payoff worth it? sort of. it certainly gave this book a whole extra half-star because i was ready to two-star this book, if not one.
do with this info as you will.
