Period murder mystery where a ton of young women are brutally murdered, an unconvincing climax, and a villain who wanted justice but Went Too Far. Most of this book, like too many others, is just focused on the main character being helpless and weak, pulled along the plot by other people’s actions, repeatedly needing to be saved.

Based on the number of publications, there seems to be a large audience for miserable books focused on disempowered young women who need the protection of the one special man who won’t do violence to them, but it’s really not the genre for me.
