Decent enough mystery; Not much of a twist but compelling enough of a story. Loved the protagonist and her journey. The romance was great on her side but there was not much I found engaging about the love interest as his own character outside being a love interest that complemented the protagonist.

Enjoyable
This was a pleasant surprise. I really loved the story and really appreciate the characters' depth and development.
This was written in a very smooth way, it's one of those murder mysteries that's so chilling that you just enjoy the vibes of the book instead of being so tense throughout the book and just keep on trying to make a list of suspects.
I'm really digging the fact that this was set in a completely different era; it gives it a sort of historical vibe.
The complications, the tension, the treasons, and the plots inside the royal palace were just the cherry on top.
Regardless of how good or bad the royal prince was, it was so awful what he went through and how his father treated him.
It was heartbreaking hearing him say that he didn't want to be a king; he just wanted to have a father like a normal person.
That was just sad.
I have great respect for the author's delicate handling of the prince's tragic story.
She skillfully presented his actions while hinting at the difficult environment he was raised in and his mental health issues, avoiding any sense of stigma.
This was a remarkable achievement, especially that the prince's character was based on a real historical figure.
The entire story was filled with a spectrum of emotions: disappointment, fear, cowardice, weakness, strength, determination and hope.
I love the wisdom touch in the book as well, and one of the things that I really admired the most was the complicated relationship that our FMC had with her father and how she was able to break free from that.
Really enjoyed this one.

What a thrilled book did i just read! This slow burn really burnt meeee! Seems like I just dive down in to historical K-drama. I love the idea of mere suster investigate a murderer case helping the inspector. It's a bit hard at first, bcs the name of chara and some new korean vocab i just know.
I began in anger when the story focusing in Hyeon background family, moreover the tense relationship between her and her father with the anger issues. Seems sexism at it first, just like the one of many problems among the Southeast Asia culture.
It also thrilling and scary when the conflict increasingly reaching the peak of it. I think there's a plot and it's kind a missed but oke still oke. The Inspector surprisingly being nerf at the last time in the forest, why should he leave hyeon and go to the forest at first?? Bcs of the sound? Can't you two just wait in the house and waiting for the antagonist come or when the antagonist suddenly conscious and tied herself (?)
I love the relationship development of both Hyeon and Eonji, always makes me flushed. Arrghhhh.

I made the unfortunate decision of starting this book a few hours before bed and was up half the night. Which honestly isn't too out of character for me but in this case I really couldn't put the book (kindle) down.

I read this entire book while forgetting it was YA and thought it was adult fantasy. The YA genre explains why it felt a little simplistic. Not that YA can't be sophisticated - it certainly can - but in this instance the writing did feel a little "young" for an adult fantasy.
This book gets bonus points for being set in 18th century Korea and not being a complete downer of a novel about how Terrible It Is and how Oppressed Women Are. It has a love story! That's not tragic! While there has certainly been an increasing number of books set in the historical past outside of the United States and Western Europe, the majority of them continue to be Tragic Books (not that Western Europe and the US escape a glut of Tragic Historical Fiction, but at least there's so many historical fiction books that you can find mystery/romance/etc. books as well). So any book set in 18th century Korea that is not terrible and is not tragic catches my attention.
A historical mystery following Hyeon, a palace nurse, who investigates the murder at her old nursing school, it also has a romance in the form of detective prodigy Eojin, who is also investigating the murders. There is also palace intrigue, since everyone is scheming against everyone else and Hyeon finds herself caught up in it against her will.
Despite the gruesome murders, it doesn't feel that dark. And despite the threat of death/banishment/torture, it doesn't feel that high stakes. This made it a little slow, but easy to get through. The major downside of the book is the simplistic characterizations, which probably contributed to the low stakes. The resolution of Hyeon's complicated relationship with her father is one example of this ().
