the way that i ATE THIS UP should be criminal. i literally started it on my lunch break at work and never stopped until finishing it. the chokehold from the PLOT POINT TO PLOT POINT is SICKENING. pls just do yourself a favor and read the book
I took a little break from reading #TheRedPalace by @junehwrites - two #LibraryBooks I had reserved came in and as I owned The Red Palace, I knew I could go back to it once my library books were finished.
Well, that time has come and I just finished The Red Palace this morning (as I ate breakfast).
It was lovely to read & while my Korean pronunciation of those really long worlds is still very bad, the Character names were much easier (thanks to all my Kdrama watching).
I loved the mystery. Nurse Hyeon & Inspector Eojin were wonderful.
@junehwrites, I look forward to reading #ACraneAmongWolves.

“Some dreams, I'd learned, were meant to fade away. And to let go of them didn't mean to let go of myself, but to release the life I'd imagined I wanted. The loss had grieved me at first, but in its fading away-slowly, very slowly-a new dream had bloomed.”

My thought process started off with "Wow! This feels like a kdrama," and then "Oh! I forgot how stressful kdramas are!" for the last 60ish pages. Despite all of the stress and yelling I did, I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy, fast read! I loved all of the character developments, the callbacks to certain scenes in the beginning, and the twists and turns in this book. I did not figure out on my own who was behind all of the murders, which makes sense because I am pursuing medicine instead. I hope everyone gets a chance to read this book and figure out the mystery as our two main characters do.

It took me forever to finish this book because I just kept getting bored and would put it down to start reading something else. I had initially rated it as a 3 when I finished it but after thinking about the story for a bit longer I had to bring it down to a 2 because I wouldn’t be able to recommend this book to anyone as a “must read”.
The least interesting part of the story is the mystery, as we don’t get enough background on the players involved to really care about them or their motivations. We never get any insight into what caused the prince to murder the first nurse, so the responses of the other characters didn’t really matter to me as a reader, other than it obviously sucks that someone was killed. I also thought the ending was really anti-climatic and seemed rushed for how long the two main characters had been searching for answers.
I wish it had been darker and leaned into the horror of the situation, as the real story of Prince Sado is more upsetting and interesting than what we were shown here. The book seems to almost want to portray him as not that bad of a person which seems like an odd take, even with there potentially being some ambiguity in what crimes he committed in real life.
