I gave this book a home on my shelf for years and it betrayed me by being bad 😔. You’d think I’d know better than to take book recs from my Instagram algorithm, but college me was still naive and hopeful I guess. I found the book boring and possessing an over-reliance on telling rather than showing. The mystery was unfortunately very obvious to me and I figured it out within the first 5 chapters. But with that said, I did like both the setting and the themes explored in this book, particularly those about difficult fathers and the conflicts of filial obligations of revenge. I also think Hur has accidentally created in Baekhyeon a character that wants to be forcemasced so bad (but that might just be my own interpretation 😂). And while I didn’t like this book, I should acknowledge that I’m probably not in the age range of its intended audience. I probably would’ve eaten it up had it come out when I was in middle school

A good read. Simple writing with a lots of history and cultural terms. I don't personally think we dwelve enough between the relationship of characters. Love the protagonist even thought we don't see much of her knowledge as a palace nurse. A quick and enjoyable book.

3.5⭐️ i enjoyed this book! If you are a fan of historical fiction and especially period k-dramas then this is definitely for you. The characters were good. I would have preferred more depth and development from our characters whereas this was more plot driven in my opinion. Either way I did enjoy it overall.

This book had a perfect balance between mystery and romance.
I didn't think I would like the romance part as much as I did but it really blew my mind. Initially, I didn't like the idea of mixing the 2 because I thought the romance would be boring and it would take away the thrill of the mystery. What I liked about the romance is how subtle they are in showing. Actually it's a typical enemy to lovers plot but in a very subtle way that makes me appreciate their relationship a lot more. In the end, I was more excited for the romance than the mystery.
Mystery itself is also equally good. The context of a Palace nurse is amazing, because it really shows both the Palace world and the commoner world and its contrast. A lot of new suspects introduced and all of them I fell for it because of how perfectly they fit in terms of motive and ability. Really kept me guessing to the very end although the answer was quite obvious.
Context itself is amazing. Korea in the past will always be so intriguing to me because I know so little about it. Reading this gave me a glimpse into the social norms and hierarchy in that time which was really interesting. Only complain is how much plot armour the protagonist has. As a female servant in the past, I don' think she should not have so much power and access to information but she really got a lot information so fast and even many audiences with royals.
Great read for both romance and mystery
