This book is about World War I and two privileged gay British soldiers quoting poetry at each other when they are not reading Adam Bede and Thucydides, whoever he is. Weirdly, their whole class somehow seem to be gay or at least experimenting.

We all know the horrors of war, there is nothing new here. It is well-written, and I was interested in the characters, but almost everybody died!

Hated the women who gave white feathers to young men they perceived to be cowards. They had no idea.

This is a heart wrenching and brutal debut novel well worth your time.

This is one of the most devastating books I ever read. Even with the knowledge of it being set in the first world war, I was not prepared to cry so many tears for fictional characters.
You start to love them and read about funny moments and just some word later you find out that they died.
I cried horribly and will probably never touch it again, even if it was such a good written book.

Yeah, I wasn't prepared for this book. It broke my heart a thousand times, and it made angry and sad and hopeful. I hoped for them to be safe and to be happy, and it wasn't the case for a lot of the characters but it was for some of them. It's a great book, one I wish I could read again for the first time, and it isn't something that happen to me very often.

It's going to stay with me for a long time.

Hands down the best book I’ve ever read. Crazy that this is Alice Winn’s debut. I found myself laughing, crying, being endlessly frustrated and hopeful. The way Winn describes the movement between characters and the implications and devastation of war is incredible. As much as this novel goes far in highlighting the injustices of historical laws against LGBTQIA+, it is written in such a way that their sexuality and genders is irrelevant. It’s a complete depiction of ‘love is love’ and it’s just beautiful.
