Book was pretty flat and so were the characters but it proved interesting especially
in the end with the Amma plot twist. You could sort of see it coming and it was so close to the end that it wasn't really enough to help the rest of the book but I’m glad it was there

I enjoyed many things about this book. The writing flows well and easy to read, the premise is compelling, the world building makes the setting feel very lived in. However, much like Gone Girl, I was let down by the explanation of the central mystery. The real mystery isn't even resolved until the epilogue in an almost throwaway line, which was weird and kind of off-putting. Gillian Flynn has a style of 'twist' that is just not for me. It almost feels like these 'twists' are just employed in an effort to be provocative as opposed to creating a cohesive narrative.

This was a really tough book to read. The characters are disturbing (not just in a murder mystery way but just the way they talk about other people is hard to sit through) the vibe is unsettling, and it definitely took me a while of processing after finishing before i could appreciate it. I think the book had a really interesting and almost poetic depiction of power and subversions of power that I did enjoy.

Definitely all the trigger warnings here -very graphic depictions of trauma, harm (from others and self), and just people talking about and treating others in really ugly ways. The casual fatphobia and obsession with white beauty standards was also pretty annoying (can I get please read a single book that doesn’t talk about how stereotypically beautiful the main character is). I don’t know if that was the point given the darker themes of the book and the whole flawed characters thing, but it definitely didn’t make the book any easier to get through.

I genuinely hated this book I would not have read this if Sofia didn’t annotate it for me. Tbh her annotations were what got me through. I’m terrible at predictions but I guessed the plot so damn quick and the mediocre twist at the end was not enough to redeem this even a little bit. Reading this was so deeply unpleasant and I felt sick the whole time lol.
