God, this book is just so oppressively dark. I'd seen the show, so I knew what to expect, but there is scarcely a glimmer of light in the whole thing. It's a good, taut mystery, though, focusing on a truly troubled and damaged protagonist. I think the
cutting, especially the words, is a bit heavy-handed and needless
, but maybe that's just because it's triggering for me. It's a hard book to read and to recommend, but it's written well! Ha ha.

Wanted to like this after seeing high reviews but too spooky for me! Only got about 1/4 of the way through... interesting premise and read the summary online after, but just not my type of book.

Gillian Flynn's 'Sharp Objects' is an absolute masterpiece of psychological thriller literature. From the moment I delved into its pages, I was entranced by Flynn's dark and haunting narrative, and I couldn't put the book down until I'd devoured every chilling word.
Flynn's storytelling is nothing short of brilliant. She weaves an intricate web of mystery and intrigue, and her ability to create an atmosphere of palpable tension is second to none. As I followed Camille Preaker, the deeply flawed yet utterly captivating protagonist, through the twisted secrets of Wind Gap, Missouri, I found myself completely immersed in the unsettling world she inhabits.
The characters in 'Sharp Objects' are as complex as they come. Each one is etched with such depth and realism that they leap off the page. Camille's internal struggles and her tumultuous relationship with her family are portrayed with a raw honesty that is both unsettling and profoundly relatable.
What truly sets this book apart is Flynn's skill at exploring the darkest corners of the human psyche. Her exploration of trauma, self-harm, and the impact of family dynamics is unflinching and thought-provoking. The psychological suspense she crafts keeps you on edge until the very last page.
Furthermore, the narrative is riddled with shocking twists and turns that left me reeling. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, Flynn would drop another bombshell that left me gasping in disbelief.
'Sharp Objects' is not merely a thriller; it's a work of art that delves deep into the complexities of the human soul. It's a book that lingers in your thoughts long after you've turned the final page. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers that push the boundaries of the genre and leave you questioning everything, then 'Sharp Objects' is an absolute must-read. Gillian Flynn has firmly established herself as a master of her craft, and this book is a testament to her storytelling prowess.

It's an accident of history that this grody, grimy, lurid exploitation book materialized at a time when film and TV was going through a self-imposed stylistic minimization. This kind of book needs a De Palma adaptation circa 1983, where the emotions grow and corruption is in every corner until finally the agonizing endings cascade insanity in escalating wildness, then drops the curtain in a couple hundred words of a curtsey to the audience. Plenty of "troubled lady with modern haircut returns to small home town with secrets" books before and after this one , but this one relentlessly, wildly, screams in your ear that she shouldn't have done that. It's frankly great, a bravura debut.

“I have returned to my childhood, the scene of the crime.”

So I hated gone girl. I read it when I was 17 and found the characters insufferable. For that reason, I never picked up another one of Gillian Flynn’s books until now.

Sharp Objects is a fantastic mystery, a raw look at what it’s like to grow up female and have a horrible relationship with your mother. It’s fucked up, but in a way that makes you keep reading. It took me until the last moment to figure out the twist, which had me thinking “oh shit, of course!”.

Very good, would absolutely recommend if you enjoy fucked up mysteries. Probably could’ve done without repeatedly describing a 13yo’s breasts, though.

I would also recommend reading the trigger warnings before touching this book as some of the descriptions of self harm are quite graphic. Stay safe.
