it took me a while to get to the middle of this book, but then once the pace picked up, i was hooked by this dark, disturbing read that pulled me into a depraved world and refused to let go until the very last page.

if you're in the mood for a psychological thriller that's as chilling as it is thought-provoking, this is the book for you. just be prepared to be left with a lingering sense of unease long after you've closed the cover. i rated this 3.5 stars for its twisted depravity and deducted stars because the ending felt rushed and i wanted to delve more into the recover process

so flynn is obviously a master of the thriller/mystery craft- she writes in a way that leaves the reader of their edge of the seat and heavily levies their interest from page to page. the pacing was fantastic, the characters felt so authentic.
however, where flynn falls short is with delicacy. given the themes she’s writing about in this one particular, there’s is sometimes a bluntness or sharpness (no pun intended) that comes across as a bit crass.
also the ending feels bare, underdeveloped. the last two chapters feel like a blank white room, like the foundation is there, but no decoration.

definitely a book i would recommend to everyone in the right state of mind. so dark and twisted, unexpected conclusion.
the beginning is definitely slower, setting the scene and such, but once you get into it, oh my god couldn't let go of the book. the writing style is amazing, the comparisons with her self-harm scars. just wow.

UGH. No. If it engaged me maybe I could’ve gotten to 3, but this was mostly a waste of time. I hated the characters, I hated the useless sex scenes, I hated the dialogue. I hated it. Flynn does write some beautiful lines that I did, I do admit, enjoy. But this is not a good story, it is not a good thriller, it is not a good mystery, and it is not a good book. Yuck.

a tragic, dark read. reading it kind of left me wondering whether the point was a murder mystery, an insight into the psychology of childhood trauma or a mixture of both. eventually, i settled on both, especially given the ending. Gillian Flynn is a brilliant writer, but i don't know if I loved the book...i didn't really get as much satisfaction from it by the end as I hoped. maybe that was the point.
i just hate reading about rape, children being murdered in detail, adult/minor (even though technically he isn't) relationships etc., in books.
