I'd heard many good things about the author's first book, Maid, so I wanted to give her newest book a go. Sad to say, my read was pretty disappointing overall. There were some good insights into living as a low-income mother in America, and of course this is only one person's lived experience, but I overall found the book to be lacking in depth and perspective. I had to keep reminding myself that the author is writing from the perspective of a 35-year-old and not a 20-year-old, because the choices that she makes at that point in her life seem to lack foresight and responsibility. After awhile it was very hard to get through as the narration came across as whiny and entitled. I would still consider reading Maid, as many reviewers have said, this book is a better read. But you can pass on this one.

At times it seemed as if the author was repeating herself for the second and third time over - additionally, there were multiple points where it seemed like she had no self awareness whatsoever. In sum, though, a pretty good book & manageable read.
