For the amount of stories I've heard and read about single motherhood and poverty, along with what I experienced with my own mom growing up, I can't decide if it's more heartbreaking that this story had almost nothing new to me (i.e. the experiences are so common) or that I felt myself leaning more judgemental to something about this one. That's the point, though: shame.
Shame crashed through this book. It prevented Land from finding and using resources, it tore apart relationships, and it created a void where she made decisions for which she was judged, but at least they were HER decisions. Class distinctions continue in part because 'higher-tier' classes learn how to judge and 'lower-tier' learn how to carry that burden.
This had some good perspectives and insights, but also veered toward a quite frustrating narrator, even with my fiercest efforts to practice empathy.

- Leaving this book unrated -
I go back and forth deciding whether or not I want to rate memoirs because is it really fair to rate someone’s true story? So sometimes I go off of how I feel afterwards, how much I’ve learned or how it was written. This one is one I don’t want to rate. However I really liked this book, and I look forward to reading Maid in the future.
