I tried so hard to solve this, like insane analysis of clues and timelines and gave up, rightfully so because everyone was lying 😭 and then because it was absurd how every single passenger somehow had a connection to Armstrong case and just so happened to be on the train I jokingly said oh well it's all of them, which ofc was just it wasn't it 😭

I wish I didn’t watch the movie years ago!!! I could imagine this to be an extremely nail bitting book!

The mystery plot itself is of course fantastic. There is a reason why this book is seen as a classic. However I rate it so low because as much as I try to approach books in the time they are written, there is a certain level of nonchalant racism that just completely sickens me. These "conclusions" Poirot makes about the murder suspects due to their race are a.) False as spoiler alert
everyone did it
and b.) are wholly founded on xenophobia, eugenics, etc. For me, I'd say just watch a recent adaptation, as they've probably omitted these wild claims about ethnic groups.

How is this only my second Agatha Christie book? The first being a required read for my middle school English class??? That's an abomination really, I deprived myself of good mysteries for WAY too long. This book took a second to get me fully enraptured. When I watch mystery films my mind is totally blank until the ending is revealed, I don't try and guess the perpetrator or understand the intricacies of the plot. It's honestly against my usual academic character but this book actually had me invested enough to try and guess, even though I was incredibly wrong at every turn. I could've never foreseen this conclusion, Christie is a genius. How she wove a plot containing such multifaceted characters together this well is beyond me. Mystery writers are amongst the most creative people because so many elements are happening at once, and they still have to create a plot different from anything else done before. I will certainly read another one of her books in the future, maybe I'll even revisit And Then There Were None.

Also love the fact that I was able to put my 6.5 years of French education to use as rudimentary as my grasp of the language is.

(Just watched the 2017 movie adaptation and was severely disappointed by it. I’m so glad I read the book first because the movie would’ve entirely ruined it for me)

What a fun novel. I really liked trying to figure everything out and piece all the evidence together. I think the ending was a bit... extravagant, and I would have liked more plot throughout besides just interviews. Also, there were so many stereotypes that felt super unnecessary, and possibly just Agatha Christie's bias and racism coming through YET AGAIN!! It just makes the reading experience uncomfy. Otherwise, the pacing and backstory were interesting (if not a little triggering!) and all of the characters were quite dynamic.
