I loved this novel as much as the first time I read it around twenty years ago. This world is chilling, haunting, and seems completely possible. My review is here.

This was my introduction to dystopian fiction, when I was eleven - far too young - and many interpersonal nuances went over my head then. I am glad to have reread it and soaked up (and fully understood) the narrator’s choices, given what is going on the world right now and the excellence of the sequel, The Testaments. The passages about the fall of the US - protests, news controversy, people isolating at home, etc. - are almost prophetically eery.

Why does everything happen in the last few chapters?! I pushed myself through this book, incredibly slow.

The handmaid tale is a story about a country like America that is overtaken by terrorist. These terrorist are religious extremest that take over the country and develop a class system. Women do not have any rights or privileges. They are either maids, cooks or handmaids. Handmaids sole responsibility is to have sex and give babies to the generals. If you refuse to follow the roles that are developed in this country you are executed. This story frighten me. It reminded me of countries where women are not allowed to vote, have jobs or be individuals. It was very difficult to get into the story. There are a lot of flashbacks and it takes a long time to find out what happened to lead them to the point where everyone is under such strict rules. This book will keep you guessing and pondering about life in general.
