I was so sick of the plot line about Steps High being missing that I was kind of relieved for her to finally show back up. It only took 4 books of whinging. In true Kaya fashion she almost manages to get herself, her horses, her dad and another boy from her tribe killed by a wildfire because she HAD to have this horse back.

Mostly relieved to be moving on from the Kaya books. I am disappointed that these books didn’t live up to the potential that they had to educate about Nez Perce culture.

Cute wrap up. Wish there were more Kaya books - Emily isn't into the Beforever books yet, idk why. But maybe she'll change her mind ;-)

I placed a library hold request on this book along with the others, but then someone weeded the one remaining copy from the system. Fortunately for me, I was able to get a copy from ThriftBooks, and this was one of my favorites in the series anyway.

Since I lived in deadly fear of fire when I was a child, I'm not sure why I always liked this book so much, but it is full of vibrant, beautiful pictures and an action-packed story that resolves the various remaining plot threads from the series story arc. It also ends on a hopeful note, looking forward, and I remember loving the description of Kaya's deep emotions about her land and her people.

The historical note is dead honest about the impact of white settlement and broken treaties, but even though this book is still clear about the problems that were ahead of Kaya's people, it ends on a happy note with her growth, maturity, and anticipation for her future.
