Dated in a way that rubs me personally in the wrong way. The father character bothers me so much. This is how my father grew up. With someone telling you do it but gives them no support except to tell you they know best. This is also how my father acted except he had no fancy spy job to back up his bonkers claims and absent emotional support.
This book is what the people in charge in the US wanted you to think a family was and that it worked. I can’t get over this, I BBC am sorry. Sure there is childish unsubstantial adventure and thankfully not much religion.
I hate this book. My hate grew when the main character gave an example of every time they see a black widow they will kill her because they are poisonous. Don’t just kill please.
The main character most of the time is at the age of going into college. They come off much younger except for their hyper intelligent/skill in many disciplines. He is mostly uninteresting for anyone over five years of age. The science-fiction Earth ideas have no explanation. Sometimes seeming its normal for this world other times it seems the sci-fi stuff is invisible to the people of Earth. I don’t know.
Hate this book.

2024 reread:
A nearly perfect classic adventure story, featuring a teen boy who is straightforward and uncomplicated in his heroicness and determination, an extremely intelligent and spunky young girl, along with a heavy sprinkling of interesting science facts.
I wouldn't recommend this for very young readers because the last section has some heavy subject matter along with assumptions of evolutionary theory. Some middle grade readers might love this though, as long as they can handle the tense/scary adventure parts.

Graphic: Death
Moderate: Confinement and Kidnapping
Minor: Cannibalism

This was a great YA action book (audio). The math was a little hard to appreciate in audio version, but it was still an action filled romp through space.

Some really fun quotes on education, politics, freedom, rights, and other important topics.
