I came away from reading this feeling that it was less of a romance, and more of a commentary on generational trauma, and the pain it inflicts on naive youths. Though this story has been referenced and retold to the point of exhaustion, that message still feels fresh and alive as the moment the ink dried on Shakespeare's page.

This is not my favorite Shakespeare play (that position is for Macbeth) but I think it is a poignant exploration of the way adults see young relationships. The relationship is shallow because teens are shallow. The feud caused these young peoples deaths

--- my notable quotes ---

"With tears augmenting the fresh morning's dew,
Adding to clouds more clouds with his deep sighs:" [39]

"Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out,
And makes himself an artificial night." [39]

"Take thou some new infection to thy eye,
And the rank poison of the old will die." [43]

"But He that hath steerage my course,
Direct my sail." [51]

"That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." [59]

"O swear not by the moon,
the'inconstant moon,
That monthly changes in her circled orb,
Lest that thy love prove likewise variable." [61]

"In one little body
Thou counterfeits a bark, a sea, a wind:
For still thy eyes, which I may call the sea,
Do ebb and flow with tears; the bark thy body is,
Sailing in this salt flood; the winds thy sighs,
Who, raging with thy tears, and they with them,
Without a sudden calm will overset
Thy tempest-tossed body." [96]

"Death lies on her like an untimely frost." [109]
