personally, I was pleasantly surprised at this book. at the end of QoS, I was really anxious to see what was going to happen between Chaol and his new path. I also had decided to do the tandem read with EoS and it all flowed really nicely.
yrene was someone we met back in assassins blade, and next to the silent assassins, she was my favorite. I was excited to see if she the importance of her story played a bigger role and i’m glad it did.
at first sight, yrene and chaol hated each other and it was absolutely glorious. chaol has the best luck with getting these strong independent women in his close circle that he wants to protect and they’re like “bro no”
arghun can kick rocks for all I care, he was just always a dick
that plot twist at the end I wasn’t expecting in the slightest.

This was a masterpiece. The foreshadowing from the first few books coming back around to this. My brain chemistry has been forever altered 😅

Slow but worth it in the end

This book feels very disconnected to the others until about halfway thru. It makes sense…they’re on a different continent, with different royalty, different customs, etc. The stage has to be set first. The second half of the book is great. Big character changes, great reveals, an unexpected plot twist. If you’re not a fan of Chaol or Nesryn, a tandem read with Empire of Storms may make it more enjoyable. Either way, stick it out.

reviewing this as the tandem read. i didn’t like chaol, still kind of don’t, but i love his and yrene’s story. i wasn’t super invested with nesryn but her story definitely improved. if i didn’t have empire of storms to bounce to, i think i would’ve found this book to drag on too much which is why it’s 4 stars
