Characters - I was not a fan of Mr. Rochester. I guess he was a good man for his time but still he was very misogynistic and paternalistic towards Jane. 
Prose - I loved the prose. It was extremely poetic and nice a change of pace from more modern books. 
Themes
Love vs Autonomy/Independence - Jane grows a lot over the course of the novel and we see her constantly seek independence. She claims multiple times that she does not want to marry (despite her feelings for Mr. Rochester). We see her reject Mr. Rochester's first proposal because he is already married and she would thus be his mistress and because she fears being dependent on him who is above her social class. Then, when she lives with her (to be discovered) cousins, she is under the boot of her domineering brother/cousin who bullies her and tries to coerce her into marrying him to serve a higher purpose (God). She rejects him too. She finally goes back to Mr. Rochester who has had an accident which has made him blind and lose a limb. He becomes entirely dependent on her. She has also recently come into a small fortune. It is only when she has come into money (independent) and Mr. Rochester has fallen to his lowest (must be dependent on her) that she feels safe enough to marry him. Is this a love story? I'm not so sure. I think it is more so a story of one young woman's quest for independence and love in a world that does not offer either to women.

The length of this novel certainly vexes, but it remains a heartrending celebration, perhaps even a proclamation of the strength of the individual, both in resilience and in passion. Emotional and delightful, if a little stale at times.
