It’s been a decade or two since I last read HP Lovecraft and I still think it is a remarkably dark and disturbing universe he created. One I love the games about especially. This novella is great a world-building and creating a sense of dread. The dialogue is however somewhat difficult to read, given the datedness of the book and at some points the story got a tad boring in its repetitiveness.

It’s hard to rate a book so old. I think if this had been my first time reading or seeing anything horror related it would have been a terrifying read. It doesn’t hold up to new age horror just because we’ve seen it all but I think this would have been a gem in its time.
